Welcome to Muse

Muse is a unique new venture in Canberra's burgeoning hospitality and cultural scene – a space where good food, great wine and the magic of the written word come together in exciting and unprecedented ways. Nestled between Kingston and Manuka in the stylish East Hotel, on the edge of the Parliamentary Triangle, Muse is a meeting place for those who enjoy a grenache with their Grenville, and their Winton with a good washed rind.

We serve food from dawn until late into the night, and our carefully curated selection of new and second hand books is on sale throughout the day and night. We host a busy calendar of events featuring some of Australia's top writers, thinkers, politicians, artists and winemakers.

Award-winning architect Anthony Gill has designed a space that takes its cues from Canberra's modernist heritage. Contemporary yet warm and inviting, Muse is an inspired venue for conversation, ideas and indulgence, both literary and epicurean.

So that's our story. What's yours?

australia all over

From Margaret River to the Mornington Peninsula via Mudgee and McLaren Vale, we've travelled across Australia speaking to winemakers and vignerons to source what we think are some of the most exciting wines this country has to offer.

It doesn't matter what the grape is but it has to be grown and bottled in Australia to make it onto our list! Our focus is on small and independent producers with a brief that runs the gamut from classic labels steeped in history, to the latest in natural winemaking and emerging wine regions. As well as an eclectic selection of wines by the glass, we offer regularly changing wine flights showcasing the distinctive qualities of particular varietals or regions.

Each month we showcase a different grape varietal or a region, presenting a 'flight' of wines – three half pours of three different wines.

And for those who want to learn just a little bit more about wine and those who make it, we'll be hosting a range of events including tastings, workshops and dinners that will provide an opportunity to meet some of Australia's most exciting wine industry professionals.

But it's not just about wine. We also believe in showing what Australian distillers and brewers can produce, so our beer and spirit list is also 100% Australian. We believe that we are one of only four venues in the whole country to feature an all-Australian list like ours. You don't need to leave Canberra to explore what this wide brown land has to offer because we've done it for you!

EVENTS AT MUSE

The bookshop hosts an active program of events including book launches, author talks and 'in conversation' events with journalists, politicians, musicians, artists, chefs, winemakers and anyone else we think you might be interested in hearing from. We want Muse to be a crucible for discussion and debate - a place where people come to be stimulated, challenged and inspired.

If you have an idea for an event, get in touch. We'd love to hear from you!

chapter one

Imagine walls lined with solid American oak bookshelves suspended on thin brass filaments, vintage Afghan kilim rugs on the floor and soft lighting from a couple of slender standard lamps. Now add the low hum of conversation from the café and a glass of something red and seductive in your hand and you have an idea of what the bookshop at Muse is like.

We've put together a carefully considered selection of new and quality second hand titles that includes everything from the latest releases to long out of print classics. Perched as we are on the edge of the Parliamentary Triangle there's a focus on politics and current affairs, but you'll also find strong showings of books on food and wine, performing arts and foreign affairs, as well as the best literary fiction from Australia and around the world.

Whatever you're interested in, browsing for books at Muse will always turn up something unexpected.
