Rainbow RAC Panel Discussion

Rainbow Refugee Action are hosting a panel of speakers exploring current issues for LGBTIQ refugees and asylum seekers.

The conversation will include a discussion of the issues facing LGBTIQ people seeking asylum in Canberra and for LGBTIQ refugees settled here.

Speakers will also address the plight of LGBTIQ people held in our detention centres and the current climate for LGBTIQ people fleeing their homelands.

 The conversation will conclude with a discussion about community sponsorship of refugees – and whether our community is open to exploring this idea.

Tina Dixon is the co-founder of the Queer Sisterhood Project, a peer run and peer support group for queer refugee women in Australia. Her PhD focuses on the lived experience of queer women refugees that are viewed through the lens of trauma theory, and the concept of empowerment.

Lix Huang-Hughes is a lawyer currently representing Commonwealth Games asylum seekers in Canberra - a gay man, a lesbian, a bisexual man and two LGBT allies.

Dave Worner is a Rainbow Refugee Action member talking about the Nauru men.

Meg Clark is Rainbow Refugee Action member interested in setting up an LGBTIQ specific community sponsorship scheme in Australia along lines of the Canadian Rainbow Railroad.
