Aloft is Mike Dooley (piano and vocals) and Richard Manderson (saxophones). They play accessible, intimate jazz in a range of genres, covering blues, standards, cool, bebop and latin. Aloft explores the mysterious force that is music, seeking always to take the listener on the journey.
Mike studied classical composition and piano at the NSW Conservatorium of Music—and then dedicated several decades to humanitarian and music work in Asia and the Middle East. He returned to the benefit of Canberra’s music scene in 2010, playing with DJ Gosper’s band and undertaking several of his own projects. His and vocalist Rachel Thorne’s duo, In2Deep, released its first album ‘Just for the Heaven of it’ last year. Mike composes classical music too, and this year released a double CD of original classical piano music performed by himself and other leading classical pianists. Mike also writes film scores and was nominated in 2015 for APRA/AGSC screen music awards.
Richard studied at the NSW Conservatorium of Music in the early days of its jazz course, and has performed in many rock, blues, jazz and latin bands in Australia and overseas. In the early 1990s he toured through Spain with fiesta bands, playing Spanish and Latin American music, and on returning to Canberra spent several years playing with the salsa band Mi Tierra. He plays soprano, alto and tenor saxes, and his collaborations with Mike go back to their earliest jazz explorations.
